Crochet Yarn Weight Chart

The standard yarn weights from 0 (lace) to 7 (jumbo) with their other names, typical single-crochet gauge and the hook sizes to use, plus a skein substitution helper.

Yarn substitution helper

Swapping yarns? Match the weight number first, then work out how many skeins of the new yarn you need.

Quick rule

Same weight number + same total yardage = a safe swap. Always check gauge with a swatch, because fibre content (cotton vs acrylic vs wool) changes drape and stretch.

Questions

Is DK the same as worsted?

No. DK is a light (3) weight; worsted is medium (4). DK is thinner, so you need more yardage and a smaller hook.

Is aran the same as worsted?

Both are grouped as medium (4), but aran is slightly thicker. They can often be swapped if you check gauge.
