Crochet hooks & yarn we suggest
These suggestions are based on what the free patterns in our index call for most often — the most common hook is a 5 mm (H-8) and the most common yarn weight is worsted (4) — not on paid placement. We haven’t lab-tested products; we tell you why each type is useful so you can choose.

Hooks
Ergonomic hook set (2–6.5 mm)
If your hand or wrist aches, a soft-grip handle helps more than anything else. A set covers almost every yarn from fingering to worsted.
Clover Amour hooks
A long-time favourite: smooth aluminium head with a comfortable rubber grip, sold singly so you can start with the H-8 (5 mm).
Large hooks for chunky yarn (8–15 mm)
Chunky and super bulky blankets need L-11 to Q hooks; plastic ones are light enough for long sessions.
Steel thread hooks
For doilies and lace in crochet thread. Steel sizes run backwards — see our converter.
Yarn
Red Heart Super Saver (worsted, 4)
The most-named yarn line in the patterns we index. Cheap, tough, machine washable: good for blankets and practice.
Bernat Blanket (super bulky, 6)
Plush chenille-style yarn that works up fast for throws and baby blankets.
Caron Simply Soft (worsted, 4)
Softer drape than Super Saver; popular for garments and baby items.
Lily Sugar’n Cream (cotton, 4)
Absorbent 100% cotton for dishcloths, coasters and market bags.
Handy extras
Locking stitch markers
Mark the first stitch of a round so you never lose your place.
Blocking mats and pins
Make granny squares and shawls lie flat and measure true.
